#22 Improve GCC Support

We want to keep GCC support up to date as well as improve the build system when using GCC.

This includes:

  • Add compatibility for newer versions of GCC
  • Generally improve build system and code paths
  • Get rid of ancient hacks from dead GCC versions

We should make the effort of keeping a reasonably broad range of versions when possible.
